This cross-sectional observational study measures blood levels of the protein EBI-3 in adults with Behçet's disease and in age-matched healthy controls. It compares average EBI-3 levels between the two groups and looks at how levels relate to disease activity and organ involvement. Measurements are taken at a single time point.
What it is studying. The study tests whether serum EBI-3 protein concentrations differ between people with Behçet's disease and healthy controls, and whether EBI-3 levels are associated with disease activity and with vascular, ocular, or neurological involvement.
What the researchers hope to learn. Scientific goals are to describe serum EBI-3 levels in Behçet's disease versus controls and to explore associations with disease activity and specific organ involvement (vascular, ocular, neurological).
What this study is about
The study's own summary, as published on ClinicalTrials.gov. Underlined terms have a short explanation.
This cross-sectional study aims to evaluate serum Epstein-Barr virus-induced gene 3 (EBI-3) protein levels in patients with Behçet's disease compared with healthy controls.

- Vasculitis caused by diseases other than Behçet's disease
Study description and what participation involves
The study's detailed description, as published on ClinicalTrials.gov.
Detailed description from the registry
Behçet's disease is a chronic multisystem inflammatory disorder. Serum EBI-3 protein levels may reflect inflammatory activity. This observational study will include adult patients diagnosed with Behçet's disease according to the International Criteria for Behçet's Disease and age-matched healthy controls. Serum EBI-3 protein levels will be measured by ELISA.

You would sign informed consent and be assigned as a Behçet's disease participant or a healthy control. The study will measure serum EBI-3 protein levels (measured by ELISA) from participants. Disease participants will have their disease activity recorded using the Behçet's Disease Current Activity Form (BDCAF); the study will compare EBI-3 levels by activity and by vascular, ocular, or neurological involvement. The registry does not describe any other study procedures or visits.
How the study is structured. Observational, case-control, cross-sectional design. Adult patients with Behçet's disease and age-matched healthy controls give a blood sample at baseline; EBI-3 protein in serum is measured by ELISA. Disease activity and organ involvement are recorded for comparison between groups.
Questions you could ask
These questions are suggestions for a conversation with the study team or your own clinician, not advice.
- The registry lists this study under Behçet Disease. Does it apply to my diagnosis?
- This is an observational study, so the study itself gives no treatment. What would taking part involve for me, and would it change my usual care?
- The registry says recruitment has not started. When is it expected to open, and can I register interest now?
- No sites are listed on the registry yet. Where will the study take place?
- Which of the eligibility criteria would need to be checked with tests before I could join?

- Written informed consent
- The process of explaining a study, including its risks and what participation involves, so that a person can decide freely whether to take part. Consent is usually documented in writing, and a participant can choose to leave the study later.
- Inclusion Criteria
- The conditions a person must meet to be considered for the study, for example a confirmed diagnosis, an age range or a test result.
- Exclusion Criteria
- The conditions that rule a person out even if they meet the inclusion criteria, for example other illnesses, certain medicines or pregnancy.
