This cross-sectional observational study compares serum EBI-3 protein levels in adults with Behçet's disease and age-matched healthy controls. Serum EBI-3 concentration will be measured by ELISA and compared overall and by disease activity and organ involvement.
What it is studying. Whether serum EBI-3 protein levels differ between people with Behçet's disease and healthy controls, and whether levels are associated with disease activity and with vascular, ocular, or neurological involvement.
What the researchers hope to learn. To measure and report mean serum EBI-3 protein concentrations in patients with Behçet's disease versus healthy controls, and to evaluate EBI-3 levels according to disease activity and presence or absence of vascular, ocular, and neurological involvement.
What this study is about
The study's own summary, as published on ClinicalTrials.gov. Underlined terms have a short explanation.
This cross-sectional study aims to evaluate serum Epstein-Barr virus-induced gene 3 (EBI-3) protein levels in patients with Behçet's disease compared with healthy controls.

- Vasculitis caused by diseases other than Behçet's disease
Study description and what participation involves
The study's detailed description, as published on ClinicalTrials.gov.
Detailed description from the registry
Behçet's disease is a chronic multisystem inflammatory disorder. Serum EBI-3 protein levels may reflect inflammatory activity. This observational study will include adult patients diagnosed with Behçet's disease according to the International Criteria for Behçet's Disease and age-matched healthy controls. Serum EBI-3 protein levels will be measured by ELISA.

You will be asked to give written informed consent and provide a serum sample so researchers can measure EBI‑3 protein levels by ELISA at baseline. If you have Behçet's disease, your disease activity will be recorded using the Behçet's Disease Current Activity Form (BDCAF) and information about vascular, eye (ocular), and neurological involvement will be collected. Healthy control participants will provide the same baseline serum sample for comparison. The registry record does not state the total number of study visits or other procedures beyond these baseline assessments.
How the study is structured. Case-control, cross-sectional observational study. Adults with Behçet's disease and age-matched healthy controls will have serum EBI-3 measured at a single time point by ELISA; disease activity will be assessed using the Behçet's Disease Current Activity Form (BDCAF). The study compares average serum EBI-3 levels between groups and across subgroups defined by disease activity and organ involvement.
Questions you could ask
These questions are suggestions for a conversation with the study team or your own clinician, not advice.
- This is an observational study, so the study itself gives no treatment. What would taking part involve for me, and would it change my usual care?
- The registry says recruitment has not started. When is it expected to open, and can I register interest now?
- No sites are listed on the registry yet. Where will the study take place?
- Which of the eligibility criteria would need to be checked with tests before I could join?

Terms used on this page · explanations by MedicalUpdates.ai
- Written informed consent
- The process of explaining a study, including its risks and what participation involves, so that a person can decide freely whether to take part. Consent is usually documented in writing, and a participant can choose to leave the study later.
- Inclusion Criteria
- The conditions a person must meet to be considered for the study, for example a confirmed diagnosis, an age range or a test result.
- Exclusion Criteria
- The conditions that rule a person out even if they meet the inclusion criteria, for example other illnesses, certain medicines or pregnancy.
