June 2026 Research Update

This report covers research on Pompe disease published in PubMed in June 2026. For other months, see all research updates.

Last update: July 2, 2026

At a glance

ERT in pregnancy
In one small review, ERT had no reported infusion reactions.
Noninvasive ventilation
One adult case improved quickly after starting noninvasive ventilation.
Low screen results
One gene pattern can lower enzyme screens without symptoms.
Muscle fat on MRI
More muscle fat on imaging matched worse function over time.
Pregnancy, breathing, testing
This month's updates focused on pregnancy and breathing support, with small studies and case reports. Testing and imaging findings helped explain low screening results and track gradual muscle changes.

Overview

This month, research updates centered on pregnancy, breathing support, and clearer testing tools for Pompe disease.

In a small European pregnancy review, continuing enzyme replacement therapy during pregnancy was not linked to infusion reactions or reported mother-child harms. The same series described that some people had mild dips in walking distance or breathing tests during pregnancy. When follow-up was available, recovery back toward pre-pregnancy levels was described within two years.

Breathing support (noninvasive ventilation) was highlighted as a practical management tool when breathing problems are present. In a French pediatric cohort, many children had largely preserved nighttime breathing, but some had obstructive sleep apnea and a smaller number had high carbon dioxide levels. One adult case report described rapid improvement in respiratory failure after starting noninvasive ventilation.

On the testing and tracking side, a screening study in China reported that a specific GAA gene haplotype can make dried blood spot enzyme activity look low without symptoms unless paired with additional disease-causing variants. Separate imaging studies reported that muscle involvement patterns can differ by Pompe type and age, and that increasing muscle fat replacement over two years tracked with worsening clinical scores in a small adult follow-up study.

Research topics this month

Limitations

  • Pregnancy findings came from a small review, with incomplete follow-up for some people.
  • Breathing-support evidence included a single adult case report, so it cannot show how often results generalize.
  • Several monitoring results were based on small imaging studies, including a two-year follow-up in a limited group.
  • Some test findings were population-specific, including a screening study focused on Chinese families.
